Historical Origin
Wenzhou was a famous town of ancient Dong Ou with splendid culture. In A.D.192 it was the manor of the king of Dong Ou,Zouyao. In A.D. 323, it was built as Yongjia Prefecture, it was said that during the building, there was a white deer holding flowers in the month rounding the prefecture, so the place got the name Lucheng, and in A.D. 675 it began to be called Wenzhou. It was famous for the developed handicraft industry in the history, and is one of the birthplaces of celadon ware, paper making, ship building, silk, embroidery, lacquerware, and leather for shoes etc. They all have aproper place in the history of our country. During Southern Song Dynasty, it was the exporting trading port. Wenzhou is the birthplace of Nanju Opera.In the 14th century, Gao Min's play “Tale of the Pipa” became renowned both at home and abroad. Wenzhou is a good place for outstanding people, in southern song dynasty, Ye Shi as the leader of yongjia group and “four person of Yongjia” as the representitive of “Jiang Hu poetic group and in the modern China Sun Yirang, Xia Nai, Xia Chengdao, Su Buqing etc. Those were the people of great influence to the intellectual , literary and science history of our country.
